Chronic Fatigue
The experience of CFS can be debilitating, but the correct support can help enormously.
Are you experiencing intense fatigue and exhaustion?
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), or ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis), define the condition of severe exhaustion and fatigue. Although these two terms are both used, experts in the field of CFS and ME, as well as those who suffer from the conditions, have opened the debate to whether there are distinct differences between them. It is known that around 250,000 people are affected by CFS, and although it is more common in women between 20 to 40 years of age, it is a condition that can affect anyone.
Experiences of CFS vary between individuals, with symptoms ranging from physical pains and aches to dizziness, sensitivity to light and noise, and psychological difficulties. There are many symptoms associated with CFS but those who suffer from the condition commonly experience intense fatigue and exhaustion, memory and concentration loss, and a sense of depletion, as the characteristic symptoms.
Understanding CFS and its associated symptoms
- Intense fatigue that cannot be described as feeling just ‘tired’
- Aches and pains, including muscular, joints, and headaches
- Short-term memory and concentration problems
- Experiencing pains from the lymph nodes
- Stomach issues, such as nausea, pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea
- A persisting sore throat
- Difficulties sleeping
- Becoming sensitive to bright light, loud noises, and the consumption of alcohol or certain foods
- Abnormal sensations across the skin
- Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, irritability and panic attacks
- Less common symptoms include dizziness, excess sweating, balance problems, and difficulty controlling body temperature.
Supporting you and chronic fatigue syndrome with counselling
The symptoms listed above reflect how the experience of CFS is so broad. You may find that within this list of main symptoms there are some that have not been mentioned. It is important to note though that CFS is defined and diagnosed through experiencing the main symptoms for a minimum of six months; this type of extreme fatigue and exhaustion is incomparable to simply feeling ‘tired’.
However, suffers will experience times in which their symptoms are less severe and find that they are able to engage in normal activities with relative ease. Despite this, the symptoms of CFS will return, and as such, health, happiness and well-being are subsequently affected.
Treating CFS with counselling is about managing the symptoms and finding the correct tools to help you deal with any emotional or psychological difficulties you are experiencing because of the condition.
Depression, anxiety, feelings of frustration or powerlessness are common, but with online counselling, you can learn to work through these intense cycles of negativity whilst building the strength to manage your symptoms with control. Despite there being no current cure for CFS, online counselling can enable you to learn to adapt and to cope effectively through the changes that CFS creates.
