The common misconception that surrounds this disorder is that it is similar in qualities to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). While they are similar, Body Dysmorphic Disorder spans a wide range of issues concerning body image and eating habits. Outside observers also commonly confuse Body Dysmorphic Disorder as simply a feature of Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa, and that dysmorphia is a condition centred around aesthetic concerns.
The reality is that its a condition in which the sufferer is forced to see a distorted version of themselves disproportionate to the reality of how they look. BDD presents a completely distorted view and perspective of the sufferer, in stark contrast to OCD.
Those that have had a previous history of mental health problems such as Depression, Low Self-Esteem and previous experiences with abuse may find themselves at risk of suffering BDD.
What Body Dysmorphia looks like
The physical and mental effects fluctuate, but sufferers can find aspects of what we’d see as a normal day being truly challenging. Interactions with people will often be a significant challenge, forcing them to withdraw from contact with others.
Direct conversations like interviews can prove detrimental to already low levels of self-esteem and confidence, the latter of which can lead to challenges holding onto long-term employment. Sufferers can find themselves locked into a spiral of guilt, shame and depression due to the challenges they face.

- Seeking out corrective surgery on whatever they feel self-conscious about
- Talking about areas and aspects of their life that they are unhappy with to gain support and reassurance from their peers
- Demonstrating avoidant behaviour towards mirrors, or feeling trapped when confronted with one.
- Covering up excessively, and may become defensive when approached with the subject.
The detrimental effects of Body Dysmorphia can have on a sufferers body can be wide-spanning as well. This is due to the distinct lack of vitamins and nutrients over a long period of time.
