Personality Disorders

The idea of having a “personality disorder” is a controversial one. It seems to imply that your entire personality is inherently flawed, but in reality it is very treatable.

Many people are therefore frightened of getting a personality disorder diagnosis. In reality, personality disorders can be effectively treated using talking therapies. A diagnosis of a personality disorder is not an indication that your mental health issues cannot be managed, contrary to popular belief.

What are personality disorders?

There are 10 types of personality disorder, all falling into different “clusters”. These clusters are called A (odd, bizarre, eccentric), B (dramatic, erratic) and C (anxious, fearful). Cluster A consists of Paranoid, Schizoid, and Schizotypal Personality Disorders. Cluster B consists of Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Histrionic Personality Disorder and Antisocial Personality Disorder. Cluster C consists of Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorders. These names are all fairly self-explanatory, with the exception of Borderline Personality Disorder, where the term “borderline” refers to being on a borderline between a diagnosis of psychosis and a diagnosis of neurosis.

How do I know if I have a personality disorder?

Different personality disorders have very different symptoms. They are grouped together under the umbrella term “personality disorder’ because of the fact that they all involve intense emotions and behaviour. You can read up about some of the commoner types of personality disorders on the following pages:
